If you're in the UK I can highly recommend pcspecialist.co.uk -- you can buy their laptops without Windows, saving £79! Their customer service is first-rate as well.

I can second the recommendation. I recently bought a desktop (without Windows), saving money and getting the machine that I wanted.

I assume that major name companies around the world offer Linux on many platforms but not in the consumer channels.

If you get the enterprise level stuff it tends to offer linux.

To update this thread, it has been announced that Canonical has joined forces with HP, AMD and Ebuyer to launch a range of laptops in the UK that will run Ubuntu out of the box.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...tops-to-the-uk

The entry-level HP ProBook 255 has an AMD A4 processor and 4GB RAM, the ProBook 355 has an AMD A8 and 4GB, and the top of the line HP ProBook 455 (above) has an A10 with 8GB.

All have Ubuntu 15.04 installed and Bluetooth as standard. The screen is a backlit LED 1366x768, so full HD, and the laptops come with an optical drive and a 720p HD webcam.

Prices start at £199.98.

They offer it on servers but not desktops/laptops. I'd build my own desktop but finding a laptop without windows is becoming difficult. Then finding a business grade laptop rather than a consumer grade without windows it even harder.

yea, see they are all consumer grade laptops. when I was a reseller I used to get on my reps for doing that. Be it Compaq/HP/IBM/Dell, they all would put consumer grade into he small business market and I'd tell them that small businesses are the ones that need the higher quality systems, they need to overnight warranties they can't wait for the mail in like the consumer models come with. When you have a single payroll machine it has to be up.
(all the ones mentioned in that thread are consumer grade/brand).

Hi,

I have been in a small business and used consumer grade equipment without issues. The major point was cost since we had limited resources. Even in my LAB 24/7 at the university we used consumer grade throughout to keep the cost down. Our experiences for down time were for most systems at end of life. Repairs in house were the route to go since we had the facilities to make any repairs.

I have a Dell XPS Laptop sitting on my lap and it is a valued resource at a good price that was upgraded by me with new 'SSD', 16GB memory along with a second drive in bay2. XPS did require a new wireless card that failed but replacement was easy and I even got Bluetooth with the replacement card. I eventually will replace that hard drive to a new 'SSD'. I rarely boot into Windows except for when a client needs support. I think I will move Win 8.1 to a VM since this little beast can handle it.

I do not need a Tough Book like Laptop since travels are limited. When I do need to travel with a Laptop, I have lesser rated equipment that can be used without worry. I do build all my Desktop machines with quality parts and maintain those systems without major issues. I have seen business class/Professional grade equipment fail and repairs can be expensive since most repair parts are single source. Quality after market parts are limited for that grade of equipment so one must rely on the manufacture at increased $$$$.

I will buy good rated products that are consumer grade that fit my systems support be it for LAN or system sub-systems and then fit for those same systems. My failure rates are low therefore no excessive load on my pocket book.

I will not buy Cisco or other Pro-grade equipment since the prices are prohibitive to most users. Why rack a server system like IBM, when a well specified sys-generated small footprint multi-core system and enough memory along with a fast 'SSD' storage will suffice within a SOHO/LAB and fit those needs at a fair cost? I really see no reason to enrich Major equipment suppliers when a doable system can be created with graded equipment to meet the needs for small SOHO/LAB usage.
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

I've wondered about the XPS line from dell, seems to be placed between the inspiron and latitude. I'm been running almost ll latitudes avter having troubles with the inspiron.

problems is I believe that one xps model they user to sell without windows is not available anymore. I can't go buy a latitude without windows.

My solution the last couple years has been buying "refurbished", even got my wife a really nice latitude 12. But hers came with windows 8 so she can't use it.

Hi,

I agree that Dell refurbished is the best way to get a valued Laptop. XPS is a two hard drive bay machine. As I stated earlier my MS Win is used for clients and one reason to upgrade that bay to a 'SSD' to get the power down at a faster speed. All of the Dell purchases had a Windows install that I would repartition so I could install Slackware. I will continue to buy from Dell as long as the hardware meets my specifications. Great prices on warranty refurbished hardware even if MS Win is installed.
Off to play a round of golf!
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

I figure if I buy the refurbished then at least I'm not buying the license, someone else already did.

You can get the new XPS 13 with Ubuntu from Dell, they call it the "Developer Edition":
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xp...h&isredir=true

It's the exact same price as the Windows version though...

Hmm, when I looked last it wasn't currently available, maybe it was in between a refresh or something?
Are the XPS built as sturdy as the Latitude?
