Cmedia Sound Config = Bad News
Ok, heres the deal. I'm a newbie, im ready to ditch winbloze, excpet for one thing.... My sound wont work in 6 point surround. I have a CMedia 8738 Sound card, but i only get feed through 2 of the 6 channels. I have been told that all i need to do is to make menuconfig in the linux source directory and then change the soudn settings to 6 speakers. I have done this, but my problem is that whenever i re-compile the kernel, the make modules command and the commands after that all return a whole lot of errors, and then when i reboot, linux cannot start any modules, including usb-uhci, which is bad news as i use a usb keyboard and mouse and end up locked out of linux :|
I run Mandrake 8.2 if that is any help.... please can someone help me.

You said that you've done the make modules step, but have you done the make modules_install bit?

Yeah, ive followed all the steps in recompiling. Sorry i cant tell you the errors, as now i cant log in without a keyboard or mouse... I cant remember exactly, the make dep runs fine. Make modules returns a whole lot of red error messages, make modules_install starts to do something but stops very shortly with an error message. depmod -a does the same.

On the company website, it is telling me to do it differently to what people on here are saying. They say that you dont configure the multi-channel in the kernel, but in a module.
They Say: Configure the 4 Channel setting parameters:
a)Modify the /etc/conf.modules configuration file using vi text-editor
#vi /etc/conf.modules
b)Use the “a” command to modify and add in a line as follows:
“options cmpci four_ch=1”
c)Press ESC and key-in “:wq” to save the configuration and exit.
I dont have that conf file, either because im on a different distro (the tutorial was written ased around redhat) or because the make modules command isnt working (they say to re - compile the kernel first enabling cmedia sound cards, which i have tried, wont work.)
