I had opened a virtual console using ctrl+alt+fn key configuration and now I can switch between them using alt+fn keys but I do not know how to close them
Well when you guys tell me that I do not need to close just log out of it since it was always there, I wish to ask you this, it might be true that it was already there, but I actually started it using ctrl+alt keys in vmware. It was not there, cause the consoles of other fn# are not accessible till I start them, so I was wondering since I started it how do I stop it
First time TWO people jumped in ahead while I was typing!
But I'm not familiar with vmware, so I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. In a normal linux system typically 6 copies of /sbin/getty are started, each of which sits waiting for a login on the corresponding screen, and the Ctrl-Alt-Fn# keys switch between them. They use no significant CPU or memory. Even if you kill one, it is restarted by the system, so they are always there.
Hello there,
I have a not-unrelated question pertaining to virtual consoles. I am currently running Ubuntu 9.04 an I have noticed that on exiting any of the TTYs the system switches automatically back to TTY7, instead of returning to the login prompt in that given TTY. I've googled for some time in search of an answer, but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. I'll appreciate any hints on how to change this behavior.
Regards
Wojtek
