Clipboard contents vanish on program kill - why?

Hey,

Why is it so when you copy some data/text into clipboard from let's say firefox and then do a "$ killall firefox" the contents of the clipboard will disappear? This seems to be common to all programs I've tested so far. The clipboard text will only vanish, if you kill the program. Tt will not disappear when you close a program with the "x" button on the window border or by doing "File => Exit".

I just lost some important data this way...

Using Xubuntu.

Most clipboard implementations rely upon the application which posted the data to provide it to-and-from the clipboard. If you are copying and pasting data from one application to another, keep both applications running until you're done (and the data is saved). I've found this to be true on most systems not just Linux. This is one of the secrets to why clipboards are magically able to "clip" anything, as well as to "paste" anything.
