Yes, I believe that I see 3 kopete binaries-- one in /root/.kde/share, one in /usr/share/apps, and one in /usr/bin.

I'd guess that the one in root is the CVS build (which may or may not be functional), but which of the other two is the original binary installed and which is the new one installed by KDE 3.2, I have no idea. I would expect, though, that the one in /usr/bin is the one being used since that is usually first or second in the $PATH$, as chefmark noted.

In any case, it's too many binaries, and running a 'which kopete', as chefmark also said, is a good idea, as there's a good chance that one of the old binaries is trying to call and use the new libraries (which won't work).

You might also try starting kopete with the full path, rather than just the binary name, to see if any of them actually work.
