Civilization 4 complete edition

Hey I got Civilization IV the complete edition. I installed it with wine 1.1.21

It always looks at the current version of DirectX and decideds whether to update files or not.

What are you supposed to do if you're using Wine? Wouldn't I need to be logged in as root if it wanted to update DirectX? But isn't installing as root a bad idea? Does wine even use DirectX? I have no idea.

I'm thinking it's okay to just install as a regular user and let Civ IV think it's installing DirectX or something. I still have to copy some dll files, maybe I'll get it to work.

WINE can be a tad hit or miss at times, especially when DirectX becomes involved. As much as I love CIV4- (I just invaded China) I keep a Windows install around for that. I don't like your odds of pulling this off. However, if you do I'll be very keen to find out how to do it.

Oh it works almost flawlessly. I got the DVD, the one with all the expansions. But I'm playing the original before the warlords expansion, probably just because I like the intro the best. (I still never played beyond the sword.)

It's easy as hell. Just do 'wine install.exe' or whatever it's called. Let it try to install DirectX. It takes forever, go to lunch or something. It will keep saying the same message over and over in the terminal, I thought it wasn't working. But then all of a sudden it starts installing like half an hour later. Then just follow the directions at WineHQ:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...sion&iId=10158

I found all the dll files here:
http://www.dll-files.com/

And then just go to the libraries tab in winecfg and add msxml3 and msxml3r to the existing overrides thing. (I have no idea what any of that means but who cares.)

Also I remember after it was done installing it acted like it was about to begin installing again so I just picked cancel. I don't know what that was about. Or maybe it was trying to install that other game, colonization? I don't know.

Actually I'm not sure if warlords and beyond the sword work, I haven't tried them. You might need to do some more stuff in winecfg or move some dll files yet, don't know.

Oh yeah and the only thing that doesn't work is the progress bar on the cities. Just go to options and you can make it display the number of turns in the two progress bars so you don't need them.

Hey I got Beyond the Sword to work, too.

First I had to delete that msxml dll file from the Beyond the Sword directory. And then it ran but the fonts were crazy. So then I copied a font file:

Piece of cake.

Lot of work. I would have to say I'd just keep a windows install around for that sort of thing.

What are you talking about. There's exact directions on how to do it in this post and it takes like ten minutes. Yeah, whew, that's so much work. I'm exhausted. I've never worked so hard in my life.
