Choppy windows
I've just installed the newest nVidia drivers for my GeForce2 Pro, and I'm finding window & desktop redraws to be excessively slow. Any settings I can change to improve that? I'm using GNOME in RedHat 8.0.
Thanks in advance. |
depends what the machine you're running actaully is. some information is kinda useful... if it's an older machine then gnome will probably be the issue, try a smaller window manager like blackbox.

It's somewhat old, but not ancient.... GF2 Pro, AMD 1.2GHz, 512 PC2100. I have Windows XP installed as well, and everything about it is fast as can be. I can't think of any reason GNOME would be worse.

no, that should be fine. see if "top" shows up anything that is hogging the cpu.
|
Also, when I move a window around, the CPU usage jumps to 100%!! That doesn't seem right. When I'm not moving windows, it's at about 6%.

Nvidia has reported that there is an 2D slowdown issue with the 4191 drivers. If most of your computing is non-3D, you may want to stick with the previous drivers (3123.) You can get more info at the nvnews bulletin board in the "Linux And NVIDIA Graphics" forum.

I'm looking at the nVidia drivers page, and the older drivers don't have kernel files for RedHat 8.0. Will the 7.3 ones work?
Also, i ran xdpyinfo and found that "backing-store" and "save-unders" were off. I don't know exactly what those mean, but their names suggest that they may be related to window control.... how might I turn them on? |
I have a GeForce2 Pro also, but it's in a RH7.3 box. I've always used the *.tar.gz files (instead of *.rpm) and I haven't had any issues. If you want to stick with a *.rpm file, you can try the *.src.rpm ones.
I don't know about the two options you listed, but you could probably find the answer on the nvnews board. Speck |
I am starting to regret installing the NVIDIA drivers at all. lsmod reports that the nvidia.o module is 1468192B, which is almost twice the size of my compressed kernel. I think that's just a little rediculous. Now when I try to revert back to my old setup the xserver won't start.
