chmod Question

I've been playing around with chmod to test out permissions in users other then root. I can only install firefox on my root account and can only access it on root unless I give it proper permissions. I tried chmod 775 /usr/local hoping that everything in that directory including the files in the the other directories in local would have lifted restrictions. Is there a way I can do that without having to do it manually?

Thanks for any help given.

read the man page for chmod

you need -R for the change to be recursive
