Unhappy chmod question


I have read the man on chmod and done a lot of experimenting and I cannot figure out what the "s" does. The man says it "changes the user or group id upon execution". What exactly would be an application or example of this. For instance if I chmod 2777 [file] it should give me a -rwxrwsrwx how does this impact the group permissions with respect to this file?

I am just trying to get a handle on file permissions and feel like I am missing something.

I can't answer your question specifically, but here's some more info regarding the 's' for 'setuid' or 'setgid' from Chapter 14 of the rute book.
