chmod for user write entries

How can I change the permissions on a directory that has multiple subfolders and files with different user/group. I need to change the write entries to give the user permission. My guess would be
chmod -R 0700, or maybe chmod -R u+w
I don't have much experience with the chmod command and I don't want to screw anything up. I messed up the /var dir when applying a permission to a folder that had a link to the /var folder chmod -R did this. I least I think this is whats going on. So now my /var dir doesnt have write entries for the user. This is a bad bad thing. I need some help.

Thanks,
AD

I would go with chmod -R u+w

Chmod won't change the ownership. The problem with 0700 is that you make everything executable (which you probably don't want) and also remove group/other access from everything (which you also might not want, depending on what's there).

u+w will just set everything to be writeable by the owner and not change anything else about the files/dirs.
