Question Char-Major Stuff - HELP!!

Can someone explain to me what the 'char-major' stuff is when identifying modules to hardware? I can not find anything explaining this, or how to get a list of these categories for your machine. I have several unique mods I need to create an alias for to a specific mod, but have no clue as to what they are. Any in-depth explaination of this would be greatly appreciated!
