Changing ttys

I was wondering what file I go to to change my various tty sessions and where things go.

For example, if I want my GUI on tty1 instead of tty7, can I change a file to do that? What about tty12 kernel output? ANd can you increase or decrease the available tty sessions?

And while I am thinking about it.. since one can activate more than one X session.. could that be setup as a separate X session per tty?

I think that's in /etc/inittab. Open it up and see.

I also believe that the number of tty-- devices are limited by what is set up in the /dev/ device directory. But I could be wrong on that one !! But you can look and see.

Well I figured out how to reduce the number of tty sessions I have.

But how do I set X to be F1, and how do I set my F12 function to another key?

well i *think* that X should use the next available free slot. so i presume that if you removed teh first line then X may well appear on tty1 rather than 7

I'm pretty certain Kewp is dead on. LFS'ing I set up 11 ttys on one machine (and then failed to compile gnome for the next two months), but whenever I got X running, it was on F12. I wonder where it would end up if I chose 12 ttys...

Cheers,

Finegan

Thats Kep and Fine... I will try that. Then to add back in tty sessiosn I simply add additional lines. Simple enough.

Now what about changing the function key location of the service boot listing and kernel output? What about additional X sessions per function key?

I would much rather find that file and insert a pipe function for its output to review later than a screen.
