Changing the grub boot splash image

Does anybody know if there is a way to change the splash image that the grub dual boot thing uses? I opened up /boot/grub/grub.conf and saw the line "splashimage=(hd0,5)/grub/splash.xpm.gz".

I tried editing that to point to a custom picture of mine, but no matter what I try to do it doesn't load it when I reboot, it just displays a blank screen behind the text.

Your problem is that the splash image for grub has restrictions.
You cannot put any image there. The image needs to be in a xpm.gz format, have the dimension 640x480 and only have 14 colors.

If you use google, you'll find a lot of grub splash images.
If you want to use a custom one, you need to use gimp, I guess, to transform it, to use it with grub
