Changing Session Manager from KDE to Gnome in SuSE 9 Pro

I recently installed SuSE 9 Pro and I'm unable to change default window manager from KDE to Gnome. In 8.2, a simple edit in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager did the trick; unfortunately the same edit fails to change window managers in 9.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also installed SuSE 9.0 and GNOME wm isn't included in the default packages selection.
Look in YaST package manager
Try to open a new session in X you will find that you don't have the GNOME choice in the list menu.
So it's vain to replace the /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager via YaST or Console. Nevertheless I gave it a try setting GNOME and as i thought it restarts KDE after a GNOME search timeout.

I'm sure you are in this situation

But if the YaST system configuration tools don't work for your box
Reinstall all SuSE 9.0

Resolved!

Problem resolved. Editing the /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager file didn't do it this time. I had to go through YaST in order to change the default session manager from KDE to Gnome.

Ok but strange that some kind of YaST script handle this config file
Can you try something please so that i can understand better what happen
Just change run level in /etc/inittab from 5 to 3 (should be in the 10 first lines) Then modify the /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager as you did with editor "vi"
When you are in sysconfig directory type: vi windowmanager
To erase something in basic mode type x
To insert type i or a
To come back to basic mode type esc
To save settings type :w
and to quit type :q
Afterwards in bash prompt as normal user type startx. And see if GNOME is loaded
And tell me
Finally to get back automatic graphic user interface at boot just replace 3 with 5 in the above file

Hey Kme1e0n,

That's exactly what I did--changed runlevels as I prefer a text login vs. graphical--then edited the windowmanager file. startx still brought up KDE. My guess is that YaST touches some files in additon to the windowmanager file.

Confusing...

I will try the test on my box and see what happen
Is it only with GNOME or also with other X client and failsafe?
