changing motherboard and kernel

I need to change my motherboard.

Slackbox(my computer) is dead.

after the change when I plug in my old ide devices,is it best to boot using a rescue disk and a generic kernel?
the kernel in /boot on my hard drive was obviously compiled on my old board.

any oher gotchas?

I'm really keen to not have to re install the whole system from scratch.

thnks in advance.

You should be fine as long as you boot with a loaded (generic) kernel... It will certainly be enough to boot anyway even if a couple of things don't work...

I can live with that,
Hopefull i'll just have to re compile my kernel and the usual drivers that need to be recompiled whenever i change my kernel.
to get system back to its pre death state.!?

..I'll just have to "suck it and see"

thnks.
