Changing from RedHat to Slack, dont want to lose anything

I ordered a copy of the latest version of Slackware, and I am ready for the challenge. What I would like to know is what I can do to get all of my files and settings from my current Redhat install to work on Slack. I was assuming that I would just copy out the /home/user directory to a backup drive, and then copy it back into the computer once slack is on it, but will this cause any conflicts? For example, I would like to keep my current KDE settings, but will the folder with those settings get moved, and if so, will the newer version of KDE recognize it? Also, what about my gAIM chat logs, and emails, what will happen to them?

Thanks for your help :D

All your personal info is stored under your home directory so making a tarball of it and saving it on some sort of external medium or a spare disk/partition should be considered safe.
