Changing Fonts in Fedora
 

Hello. I am new to this forums and also linux and I cannot wait to start experimenting with it! I have read many things about linux and I have messed around with it before but I just seem to keep failing and being ignorant. This time it's different I really want to learn.

I need help changing the fonts so the text can look like Microsoft Windows. I am currently using Fedora 4. If anyone could help me that would be great! Again, I am new to this so I hope I can understand the instructions you give me. Thanks again.

You can install the microsoft fonts from the rpm supplied by www.mjmwired.net (you'll have to hunt - but there is also lots of good fedora information there.)

Then you can just use the gnome fonts dialog to change to whichever one you want. The dialog is in the main menue under preferences.

If you want a good similarity, the "sans" fonts look like tahoma or arial and times-roman looks like times-new-roman.

However, if you play around you'll find fonts that actually feel better than the microsoft ones you are used to. The essence of linux is variety - customise to your own specs :)

In the Control Center, under Appearance & Themes, you will find Fonts.

I checked the box, "Use anti aliasing for fonts" then clicked configure.

In the dialog box that pops up, uncheck "exclude range". Check the box Use sub pixel hinting, and change the Hinting style to medium.

I like the way that looks on my system. You may have to reboot or restart x for the changes to take effect.
