Change which buffers loaded by default when Emacs is launched

Dear all,

Is there a way to change the buffers loaded by default when you first open Emacs? In my case, for I use "ESS" it is loaded by default along with the common "scratch" and "Messages" buffers. However, when I open multiple files in Emacs, switching through buffers with C-x and arrow keys becomes a pain due to its visiting also those default buffers along with the files in buffers I intentionally opened. And this is a waste of time and confusion for me each time. I would be glad if you can help me on the matter.

this is a common issue.

It seems you can automatically close buffers with lines like the following:
(kill-buffer "*scratch*")
An alternative, and perhaps better approach is to tell emacs to ignore those buffers when cycling through the buffer list. Searching the web reveals many different approaches to achieve this. Try a search like the following.

buffer, emacs
