change partition label w/o format

hi all,
Could i change the partition label with out formatting that partition

(i know that label can change when creating fs.
mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdxy -L "label" )

I think you can use parted's "name" command to accomplish this.

yes you can. In the shell prompt give
$ e2label <device> <label>
