Im thinking about going for linux certification, what one would be recommended?

Im am thinking about going for the RHCE, the one thing im worried about it keeping it up to date. does anyone know when I would have to update it?

Also what books would you recommend?

I'm currently studying for the LPI Level 1 exam. I like that exam because it's distribution neutral. From what I've read, the RHCE exam is extremely thorough - paper test plus hands on problem solving - which is nice. Since many businesses are leaning toward Red Hat, it's probably a good resume builder.

I read on one site (can't remember where now), that there are currently no "update" paths for the certifications - that will most likely change though.

I was thinking about going for the LPI too.

I was thinking more on the RHCE because I hear it is seen the
same as the MCSE in linux. I dont like how it is distrabution specific because im a slackware user and i have to go over to redhat now.

I'm about to go take the Sair test in about 2 weeks, but i see noone has really mentioned it. Is it not a good certification? Should i do the LPI or RHSE instead?

I read an article or two recently that said Sair was second only to the RHCE. These kinds of things seem to change all the time though.

There are some scathing reviews on amazon regarding the Sair/Linux official material, though this is not a reflection on the exams. Apparently the books have not only technical errors but some basic misspellings as well.

I'd be interested in the RHCE, but since it is $749 to sit the exam, I was thinking about the Sair tests as well.

I could handle dishing out the 750 for the exam, the problem is i currently live in Houston, TX and haven't been able to find a place here that does the RHSE tests, but there are several for the SAIR tests. Does anyone know of a website where i can find a listing of places i can take the RHSE?

I'm studying for the SAIR/GNU test using the Osborne book, and it's not that well written. it's pretty clear that it was written by 3 different people - sometimes you'll be presented with the exact same info multiple times in the same chapter! - plus, the quesions seem very easy. I haven't noticed many typos, so the book had a good copy-editor, but someone needed to ask the authors "wait, why are telling the reader how to mount floppy drives again?? You've already mentioned it twice this chapter!!"

as a way to pass the test, it may or may not be good (I haven't taken them yet) but as a way to learn new things about linux the book is terrible.

also, some of the chapter review questions ask you things that were NOT presented in the chapter!!

so far I'm pretty disappointed, but I got the Osborne book because the others received pretty scathing reviews on Amazon, like sts_cat said.

oh well. a unix guru I know thought the SAIR/GNU test sounded good, but no one I know has taken any linux tests, so I hope this thread sticks around abit....
