Unhappy Central Logging Server using Webmin

Hi - I'd like to install a centralized logging server using webmin but not so sure on how to approach this on an existing ubuntu 12.10 server. I have an existing webmin 1.610 server that does samba/nfs/cifs acting as a nas file server but also wanted to use this as my central logging server where I can point all my linux and windows system logs, possibly my cisco router/sw logs as well. I can avail extra disk space as I have a san that I can mount a disk on. Can someone please advise? Cheers -DB

I have no idea for how to do this using Webmin, but the rsyslog daemon shipped with Ubuntu has the capability to accept connections and log events from remote machines. You can enable it by adding the following lines to /etc/rsyslog.conf:

# provides UDP syslog reception
$ModLoad imudp
$UDPServerRun 514

# provides TCP syslog reception
$ModLoad imtcp
$InputTCPServerRun 514
Then on other Linux boxes you can put the following into /etc/rsyslog.conf to enable remote logging:

*.* @your.server.ip.address

The Windows machines and Cisco devices will have their own mechanism for forwarding their logs to the remote syslog server.

syslog, ubuntu, webmin
