CentOS 6.3 Problem Booting Disabled the Console Management Service and 2 others
 

I have somehow managed to lock myself out of my CentOS 6.3 server.

I disabled 3 services which I believe to be the problem, in short is there anyway of accessing the chkconfig util from recovery mode at all?

How would I be able to mount the file system to be able to run that kind of a config to turn these back on?

Though when thinking about it unless I was to disabled udev-post which I did not (as I ran a LiveCD and that's what came after where my servers (not liveCD install, a fully working, (or was) server is installed) comes up after it hangs and just shows that progress bar follow up to white and just hangs there, with the above message in the more verbose mode.

It did actually bring up (not sure why) the plymouth service, been told that's not that good or something I am not too sure. Almost 10 seconds after that Putty disconnected and now I am in this situation.

Anyway, with Centos you can boot off the install media and select Rescue and it will mount your HDDs as data and you can then edit them as required.
You can even change the effective sysroot to them if required.

Due to things I have found (googled for) I have decided to jump ship, sort of (so to speak), cut a long story short, I think it's a kernel firmware update that's caused this, logically has to be really, since that's the only thing I can imagine has caused this.

Now on the annoyance of having to back it up, I have a workstation that partially runs off this unbootable or definately unusable node.

I have 2 hard drives in the unusable machine, but only 1 spare slot on my usable version of Linux, is it possible to mount 1 individually? I mean I could try and find a way of making some space temporarily and then doing them both, but would the earlier work if I can't do the 2 together?

PS I must have got confused with the other thread I made on the other site where I posted the question but nothing they say seems to work, seems like a really weird situation that I have only seen threads on CentOS 6.x and CentOS 5.2.

I might give this one last try, when it's asking for the rescue image though on CentOS 6.3 recovery mode, what does it actually mean by this, the image of the recovery Operating System on the DVD I have burnt of the OS or the image in the file system on the server I am trying to recover?

That's the part I was getting stuck on.

Any reply is appreciated, to be honest I don't think recovery mode will do what I want it to do.

I yea decided to physically take out the hard drives from the server, put them into a work station based computer, then mounted them (of course this was no harder than clicking a single menu button), copied over both drive contents, as they where on 2 seperate logical volumes as per my original setup.

Then proceeded to install CentOS again and then reload the configs, works fine.

Weird the way it wouldn't boot and I confirmed the editing of the boot kernels was actually corrupted since they showed nothing like what they are now, weird eh?

PS I will keep backups from now on, at least weekly anyways no matter what!
