CentOS 5 and what to do.

I would like to start out saying that I plan on taking network engineering and security analysis in college and then IT in university after that. What I would like to know is I have downloaded CentOS 5 and I need ideas of projects I can get started on in vmware workstation 6 so that when I got to school I'll appear to know my stuff. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks in advance.

Your best bet is probably to build a simple Web server (or rent a VPS), and then play with security on it, and do some traffic analysis. VMware is great for specific tests, but you probably won't get much of a feel for how a system works by running it inside a VM.

Incidently, Red Hat post PDFs of all of their documentation for free download on their Web site, including their Security Guide.

Agreed...Take the time to work on Apache and brush up on your scripting...
