Cell Phones and Linux?

I have a cellphone that works perfectly with any windows machine as a wireless modem. Im also able to use software to sync data to and from the phone.

My laptop is a linux machine, and it would be VERY useful to be able to use these features on my laptop. I assume the wireless modem function would be more difficult to achieve, but the software that came with my phone might work for the data sync. Its a Kyocera 2255 model, but im thinking about getting a Sanyo 5150.

Do any of you know of cellphones that are linux compatible? Are there any efforts out there to help people who want this compatibility? Does anyone have any other suggestions besides wine?
