CDE for Linux
Hi,
has any one tried CDE for Linux instead of KDE or GNOME ... I hate the way KDE or GNOME does not allow you to send you open sessions to desktop as sticky ICONS ..instead it minimize everthing down in the task bar .. Any thoughts .... I think I wanna install and run CDE just for that .. |
These jokers produce a version of it, although I think the real work is still done by Open Group, and I'm pretty certain its not free. I don't really know dink about CDE though as its the one thing I find really annoying about Solaris, but to each his own.

Thanks for the recommendations but I am kind of unsure about using something new that maybe unstable..
Too bad CDE is not fee ..no wonder Sun is going to GNOME in the new Solaris 9 OS. Also I wish if KDE would allow me to minimize my sessions to desktop rather than down in the task bar. It makes it had to go back to a particular session if you had 20 minimized down in the task bar where if they were all on desktop and showing titles can make this easy for me. |
CDE?
Does anybody know where to get CDE for LINUX on an Intel box?
Is it free? I would like to give it a try, I think that it used to come with Red Hat 6.x? Is there any way to download it and make it work with newer Red Hat distros like 7.x??? |

Also check out http://www.opengroup.org/cde/ which was also mentioned above with a link. If you want something very lightweight and is a clone of CDE for Linux and X, try www.xfce.org like I mentioned above in my pervious post. |

You can double click the "title" bar on your windows in KDE and they minimize into the title bar til you move your mouse over them, then they maximize back out. To undo the minimize effect, double click again, and it will stay maximized. |
Hi
I work a lot with lightweight windowmanagers like xfce, windowmaker and fluxbox. Mostly with xfce tho, its fast (enough) and stable. According to a friend of mine who works for sun, its just like cde, so give it a try good luck |
try enlightenment...it has that button box thingy where the minimized applications go instead of a taskbar...you could resize it to as large as you'd like

Is CDE closed source even in OpenSolaris?
|
According to the Wikipedia page CDE is still closed source and there are no plans to open source it.

CDE for Linux
Hi, I just compiled CDE for linux in Ubuntu 12.10. I followed all the instructions. It's the best thing since fried bacon and eggs! I love the simplicity and elegance. It doesn't get in the way and it runs FAST.

Well, I guess there is a reason to drag up a 10 year old post.
Can you tell us how you did it or what doc's you used in the process? Any bugs? |
