Then try editing your /etc/grub.conf file to read:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi

I have my doubts, but it's worth a try. You can always put it back

Did you get this problem fix? If so how? I have the same problem and have not found a way to fix it.

In a similar thread someone said this:

Quote:
I have dual boot machine. I was fooled by Windows ME playing a CD on my machine on my CD-RW but Mandrake 8.2 would not. It turns out that Windows allows a connection thru the motherboard to the soundcard without a wire between the CD-RWand the sound card (as I understand it). Mandrake 9.0 may have that capability but you have still not told us your distro. You may need to open the machine and check for that physical connection between the CR-RW and the sound card.
I mention this only because you said that cds play in windows and not that you looked and saw the connection was there (or still good etc...)

Good luck

I have the cable from cd to sound card hooked up, the sound card will play the test sound, and make sounds for events. When a music cd is put in the drive a gnome player opens up and the seconds begin to tick, but no sound. It does this as root and users. I have checked anything to do with the sound and nothing is muted. I am using RedHat 8 basic work station install.

run kmix at a command prompt and make sure the red buttons underneath the appropriate volume control are lit. This is a problem with gnome media (gnome-volume-control). Using kmix will fix the problem. If I come up with a permanent fix I will let you know.

I had the same problem. I opened up my box and hooked the audio cable to the soundcard and now it works perfectly. Your soundcard or cd-rom drive should come with an audio cable. In my case, both came with them.
