I have problem burning cds using RH9 x-cd -roast asks for cd image I am not clear about using it .I installed all the packages
in the RH9 distribution.Does it need any additional packages to be
installed for cd burning?
I like K3b myself. It was pretty easy. If you use it and get a driver error, post. I'll tell you how to fix. It may just be a bug in my version.
Oh, run the setup first. Won't go far till you do.
I dont understand why no one likes XCD-Roast.I use it all the time
Try this for copying CDs:
Set it up as root and change it to non-root mode with you as the only non-root user.
Make sure your drives are seen and you have set up a directory to create images to.Mine is /home/lynch/cdburn.
On the main menu choose "Duplicate CD"
Then "Read CD"
After the the image is sucsessfully written to your image directory choose"Write CD"
You'll be prompted to insert a blank disk.Do that and hit OK.That's it for CD copying.
Try this for creating file or backup images on CD:
Choose "Create CD"
Then "Master CD"
In the "File/Directory View" go through the directory tree and choose the files or directory you wish to back up.You may have to uncheck the "Display Directories Only" option and check the "Show Hidden Files" option. When you find what you want highlight it and click the "Add" button:it should appear in the "Session View" window on the left.
Now go to the "Create Session Image" tab at the top far right.
Click on the "Calculate Size"button unless it's already been done.
Then click on the "Master to Image File".Hit OK when it's finished.
Now choose the "Write Tracks" button on the left menu and then click the "Layout Tracks" tab and select the image you just mastered and click the "Add" button.
Click on the "Accept Track Layout" button
Go back to the "Write Tracks" tab and click on the "Write Tracks" button at the bottom of the page.It will ask you to insert a blank disk;do that and click OK.That should do it.

Hey, using a gui is not that mandatory, you know?!?
I've always used mkisofs + cdrecord or cdrdao, with no problem,
after reading something about this stuff.
When I still used just winzozz (long ago!) I used a gui sw,
and didn't know much about the process of creating a cd.
Now I'm better off. Thanks to Linux!
K3B is very good I think, but when I first installed it i made my permissions for my cdrom all wrong, everything got worse... I wanted to give a user the access for writing CDs, I couldn't do that.. All my access to the CD-ROM, go wrong
When I set mine up I gave permissions during the setup to all users on system example, root, dale and dale2. It alllows me to burn no matter who I log in as, except nobody. That nut can't do anything. ha ha ha.
How did you set your up? Unless there's a bug there it should work. I use 0.8.1.
Mine has to have cdrdao, cdrecord and likes to have mkisofs. If you have those the rest is not usually needed. I have burned music, CDs I bought, and copies of my Mandrake CDs. No problems yet.
If you have those packages it should work. It does list a lot in step two of setup but I don't have them either.

maybe you can help me out..
cdrdao
-----------------------
Cdrdao version 1.1.7 - (C) Andreas Mueller <andreas@daneb.de>
SCSI interface library - (C) Joerg Schilling
Paranoia DAE library - (C) Monty
Check http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/drives.html#dt for current driver tables.
Using libscg version 'andreas-0.5-UNIXWARE_Patch'
0,0,0: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B Rev: 1.00
ERROR: No driver found for 'HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B', available drivers:
cdd2600
generic-mmc
generic-mmc-raw
plextor
plextor-scan
ricoh-mp6200
sony-cdu920
sony-cdu948
taiyo-yuden
teac-cdr55
toshiba
yamaha-cdr10x
For all recent recorder models either the 'generic-mmc' or
the 'generic-mmc-raw' driver should work.
Use option '--driver' to force usage of a driver, e.g.: --driver generic-mmc
ERROR: Cannot setup device 0,0,0.
Go into the K3b program setup. Go to step 3. Look for the line 'cdrdao driver'. Click on the line and a small pull down menu will appear. Select 'generic-mmc' then click next until you get to finish. It should work then.
Someone else may have more ideas if that doesn't work. It worked for me though.
