capturing all mouse events(generic, not limited to a window)

hi,
I am trying to do a project which requires to capture all mouse
events. My app filters the events based on some parameters and
passes the rest of the events to the active window.
I am new to kernel(programming) related stuff. I tried kernel hooking
i didnt get any progress.. recently i tried gpm as well...
i want to know how to do this in a short time.. ( i have to finish
proj in one to one and a half month).... Is there any other better method??
If so please suggest me

thnx for the help
