Cant use CD-rom, USB mouse, Aumix, and Im getting lots of modprobe errors Please help
When I boot onto my freshly compiled kernel, I get alot of modprobe errors at the beginning, saying it cant find like "char-something". Then it tells me that my USB mouse has been removed, and my psaux, which is my touchpad is added, so at least that works, but Id like to have the USB mouse back. Then it tells me that 'hdc' has been added and 'CD/DVD drive' has been removed, only my CD drive doesnt work. Lastly, when KDE starts, I get errors about opening my sound device, which I cant figure out, since I made sure I put the driver in for my card. Also, ALSA doesnt start, and it says it cant find it under the MDK control center. Can someone help me with at least some of this? I posted earlier this week, but no one responded.
Also, just for s's and g's, I no longer get LILO, its stuck booting into Winblows Hopefully someone can help me fix some of this mess.
Distribution: Lots of distros in the past, now Linux Mint

Sounds like you missed a couple steps during your compile. For one, it seems you didn't set the devfs correctly, or forgot to check it as an option. devfs basically creates your device files, so missing this would hamper all but the stuff that's too important for the system to leave to devfs. As for Lilo, I'm assuming you mean it won't load linux when you select windows from the list of OSs. That's because of the missed steps. You have the kernel, but you don't have a system.map to tell lilo the petty stuff about the kernel. Your best bet would be to carefully read the kernel compiling instructions, especially any notes and warnings, then try it again. Or consider a reinstall. I did this a while back when devfs was new, and had to rebuild the /dev from hand. It was no fun at all, but I mostly did it just to do it. Lastly, you might be lucky and have a backup kernel handy. That may help with lilo, but if your /dev is screwed up, that might not mean much.
I wish I knew an easier way. The newer kernels are supposed to have easier ways to back out of a mess like this, but for some reason I've never had the pleasure of having that work. Your best bet is to reread the documentation and see if that helps, though.
where is devfs under the kernel options? Ill add it to the list of stuff Im remembering to put in there now. As for LILO, it doesnt give me the choice to boot one OS or the other, it goes automatically to Windows. How can I get it back to where I can select my OS?
Ok, did a recompile, and got the sound working, but it still keeps changing my CD rom drive so that it doesnt work, not to mention using my touchpad over my mouse. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, in reply to scott_R, there is no option in the xconfig window for devfs, so Im not sure what you meant by that.
Ok, after the new recompile, my touchpad nor USB mouse works, so I missed that somewhere along the line. Also, how can I find out what modprobe is looking for when it says 'Modprobe: cant find module CHAR-168-01' or something like that. It says this alot at the beginning of boot, and when it syncs my time to the BIOS at shutdown.
