I just had a similar experience with CentOS 5.

I installed mgdiff (an old X diff utility) which displays to remote X servers perfectly, but after that X failed to start locally, complaining:
X: symbol lookup error
X: undefined symbol: BuiltinRegisterFpeFunctions
I couldn't find simple way to resolve this. The libraries don't appear to have suffered any changes (checking timestamps and sizes of /usr/lib/*) apart from libtread_db.so (and several new libraries added of course).

My solution was to perform an install/upgrade of CentOS 5 which worked nicely. X now runs again. I wonder what critical file it changed!
However, mgdiff now crashes with:
mgdiff: Symbol '_XmStrings' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking.

Perhaps this will help some other unsuspecting user.
Best wishes,
Jeffrey.
