cant remeber username and/or password

I have installed version 6.06.1 LTS. When booting, it asks for username and password. I can't comply because I dont remember what they are. I did not write them down. How do I reinstall the software and give new names and I will write them down. Also, when I try to reinstall windows xp, the computer does not recognize any floppy, cdrom, or other hard drives. It goes directly to Ubuntu log in by asking for username and password. what do I do ? Thanks for your help in advance.

Log into one of the consoles as root. Look at the directory names in /home. The directory name should correspond to the user name. Also there will be a line in /etc/passwd. It will contain a line for each user. Then enter: "passwd username".
It will prompt for the new password. Of course substitute the username you found instead of username in the above command.
