Cannot start system (X?) after replacing motherboard and CPU
I have a SuSE 8.1 system, and I replaced the motherboard and CPU in my machine.
Now the system does not start, it is stucked in this stage: Entering runlevel 5 INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes . . INIT: Id "6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes (Nothing more to start in runlevel 5) And here the machine waits for 5 minutes and the same messages are repeated all over again. I already google searched the web and learned that the problem is related to that all of the X programs are crashing when started. What I do not know: how to solve the problem without loosing data. The only thing I can do now is to boot up the rescue system from the SuSE installation CD. But what's the next? Could you help me? |
If you got onboard video go to runlevel 3 - init 3 and replace whatever driver you got in /etc/X11/XF86Config for the graphics with 'vesa'.That 'should' give you a gui.
Got no idea how the rescue system works since I don't use Suse but as long as you don't delete or reformat any partitions your data will be save. |
Just boot into the single user mode, and then try to install the graphics driver, sound driver etc. for the new MB you bought. But I would advise you to perform a reinstall/upgrade as this way, you don't have of the problem of old drivers hanging around.

It seems that I look forward to spending my time with re-building my system for months again... (Though I just finished the last such 'project' which was due to a HDD failure)
It is easy and fast to re-install the base system but there were some programs that were heavy issues to install, and I hate struggling with them from time to time. Anyway, thanks for the help. |
