cannot list directory contents

Hi,
I have /dev/hdb1 mounted as /var/ftp, ext3 and /dev/hdb2 mounted as /var/ftp2, reiserfs.
Everything has been working fine for a long time now in my server, but today "ls -la /var/ftp2" freezes my ssh session; " ls -la /var/ftp" works fine. I had previously tried to transfer some things -using rcp. The first transfer worked fine, but the other stalled; that's when the problems started. Now i took out the HD from the one PC, put it in a usb case and plugged it in. I mounted it, etc and tried to copy, but nothing.
Ideas?

I cannot run it! I cannot umount /dev/hdb2, although i removed the entry from the fstab and rebooted! The same with the external usb disk; it appears with "mount" , although i have unplugged it.
What is going on?
