cannot get to Suse desktop since creating profile.local

In an attempt to get realplayer to work, I created a profile.local file. I copied profile to profile.local, and added realplayer to the path.
I then restarted, and it just hangs shortly after loading x. I booted from the SuSE disk and ran Rescue System, and it allows me to log in as root, but after changing to the /etc directory, I only see profile and profile.dos.
If I boot in failsafe mode, I get an endless stream of 'too many arguments' error messages.
I hate to reinstall again, although I am getting good at it. If I want to reinstall software every few months, I always have Windows to do that with.

One other thing. I no longer see /home/jeff. (the username I was using when I created the problem).

I'm not sure how badly things are messed up, and I'm sorry to say that maybe reinstalling might be the fastest way to get back to a "known good state".

But for whatever it's worth, here are a couple of tips that might help you debug the current problem(s) ...
or might help you avoid getting in so deep should similar problems occur again in the future:

1. If X hangs, then log in from another, "virtual" console:

It turns out that Linux supports multiple "virtual consoles". Even when it's in graphics mode (or
stuck trying to initialize graphics mode), you can still log in (at least in text mode).

Use <Ctl-Alt-F1>, <Clt-Alt-F2>, etc to log in to a virtual console. You have full access to the command
line to troubleshoot, check logs, kill hung processes, or even reboot (if necessary).

2. Check your log files:

The two main log files of interest are probably:
a) /var/log/messages
<= THIS IS THE MAIN SYSTEM LOG
YOU CAN USE "less" OR "vi" TO EXAMINE IT
b) /var/liog/Xorg.0.log (OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, DEPENDING ON YOUR DISTRO)
<= THIS IS THE X WINDOWS STARTUP LOG
IF X IS HANGING, THIS MIGHT WELL TELL YOU WHAT WENT WRONG

3. Try to change system state manually:

"init 3" puts the system into multi-user text mode, "init 5" into multi-user graphics mode
"shutdown -h now" stops the system; "reboot -i" reboots it

4. Try to start/stop X manually:

"rcxdm stop" shuts down X, "rcxdm start" (or "rcxdm restart") restarts it

'Hope that helps ... at least a little. And (again, for whatever it's worth) - I definitely sympathize with you.
