cannot boot due to incorrect entry in fstab

I have an fstab with an incorrect entry and now I cannot boot. During the boot, I get the proverbial

checking filesystem
fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb2

I have tried using the Rescue CD, but then it says that it cannot mount some of the filesystems on /mnt/sysimage.

How can I ignore /dev/sdb2 during boot?

I have been banging my head on the wall for several hours on this.

Hmm, you could try using a livecd like knoppix to startup the machine, then mount just the partition with your fstab file and correcting it.

i.e. there is no need to chroot - just mount the appropriate partition and edit fstab directly.
Do it from your rescue cd if you don't have a Knoppix or similar handy.

Remount

Dear,

Remount the filesystem in read write mode.

mount -o remount,rw /

This fixed my issue. After remounting / in read write mode, edit fstab and get your system mounted.
