Sorry, but I can't even enter the above without problems. Everytime I hit a CR I get syntax error responses. If it's possible what would the EXACT entry process look like......again, sorry but I just can't get it entered.
OK, in your shell, type "cat >listen", then cut-and-paste the script (and *only* the script) from your browser to your shell. Or, you can type it in by hand. Press CTRL-D to end the file and get your prompt back. Then type "chmod +x ./listen" to make the file executable, and type "./listen" to run it. The "./" tells your shell to look for the program in your current directory, which it normally won't do.
this is repeated three times. When I type in lsof -i :80 nothing is returned (only the command prompt).
I do not have Apache. I spent a fruitless hour on the SuSe web site which had multiple versions of Apache on their download page and absolutely no instructions on which version to download for which SuSe distribution (typical). Abyss is a very compact web server that I have used in its Windows version without incident or problem (it took less than 5 minutes to get it up and running).

You dont necessarily need to get apache at the Suse website. Download it from www.apache.org
I feel this would be a great way to determine if its the Abyss webserver or something else. But something tells me its Abyss, thinking port 80 is already in use when its clearly not by the examples provided and nothing displaying that its in use.
I would like to thank all of you who have attempted to help me solve this problem. I have finally thrown in the towel. The computer I am using to write this reply is also using suSe 8.2. I just purchased a new printer/workcenter after carefully reviewing all of SuSe's documentation of what will work and what will not. It cost several hundred dollars and when I got it connected up it would only print in black and white. After an hour searching on the Internet I finally found a comment on a Linux printing site that said that the PPD file would work with this printer in only grayscale and only in A4 page length. Nothing on the SuSe harware site about this. it was the last straw. I took the web server down, reformatted the hard drive to a FAT32 partition and put it back in the box. I put a Mac server together using an old Mac clone running Os 8.5 and mac http web server software. I was up and running in under 20 minutes with no problems. This is my last email in Linux as I will reformat this box's harddrive and reinstall XP. In any event, thanks for your help but Linux just involves too much aggrevation.
