Question Can someone please tell me how to install Samba ?

I've read several web pages and sifted through stuff here on linuxquestions.org, and I still cannot get this right.

1. My distro is Slack 9.0
2. I cannot find an rpm to install Samba with for Slack
3. If you are going to explain to me how to build the binary and
then install, please be very descriptive and explain in a way
that someone who knows nothing about doing it this way will
understand.

Thanks,

JC

First of off Slack doesn't use RPMs natively. Secondly, I'm sure you can find an adiquate samba how-to from a simple google search.

Though you did tell me something useful - can't use rpm's in Slackware, the comment that pisses me off is this one -
"Secondly, I,m sure you can find an adiquate samba blah blah blah"

First of all, I am a Linux newbie, and I've only had Slackware for about two weeks. So I'm allowed to ask "dumb" questions. This place is for newbies and veterans alike.

Second of all, if you actually READ my post, you can see where it says -"I've read several web pages", which means that I have already done searches on Google, Yahoo, etc.

I've already done that and read several how-to's. There is not much info that I can readily find that pertains particularly to Slackware. I am finding out that Slackware is a little more tricky than the other distro's, but I don't mind a challenge.

I notice that some of the moderators are using Slackware. I posted this so that maybe one of them, or any other Slack user, would be kind enough to spell it out for me.

Ok, I found out where I was hosing myself. It was the smb.conf that was the problem. I made it as basic as possible(the one shown in the instructions).
Also - the default directory for the install, if you make your own binary, is usr/local/samba/. Samba was looking in the wrong places for some things because I did not specify the correct location when I edited 'inetd.conf'. But to avoid this alltogether, I found it easier to start smb and nmb as daemons with a small startup script which is also shown in the install directions.

What else did I learn today ? Packages for Slackware end in .tgz . I am happy that I was successful in creating the binary myself, however if I wanted to install the package, I could not. For some reason pkgtool will not work. It gives no error messages, it just quits to a prompt. This is of course after I have selected the package to install, and I have tried three different packages.

If anyone knows anything about this please drop some knowledge.

JC
