Can not find /home partition in Xserver
 

I have Xubuntu 32 bit installed, / Root is on sda3 and I had /home on sda4. I used Partition MAgic to resize the sda4.

Now when I login I get the message

No directory, logging in with HOME=/

When I try and startx

I get the machine hanging with
xauth: timeout in locking authority file
it says this several times and then just shuts down the xserver and come out of the GUI into CLI.

I can boot up in recovery mode.

Can someone advise on how I can sort this out from the recovery boot rather than reinstalling the whole thing again.

It sounds like partition magic has done something it shouldn't have. Were there any error messages when you used it?

I'd use something else to check the partitions - can you download the system rescue cd from http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page and use parted or qtparted to check your partitions?

I did get an error message but I am not sure what it was. PartMagic managed to resize the partition. The problem is that I can not access it now the eay I want to.

When I look at /home I can see a coppy of the whole of /Root in there. It is almost as if the is a copy of the root partition within /home.

It looks as though I have to do a re-install, again.

Same thing after installing slack 11 over 10.2 w/o formatting home partition

It's a dead thread, I know, but maybe...
I saw 11 was out, and got way too excited, but remembered to install it on my test box first. Was running 10.2 on it with partitions for /usr and others, and decided I don't need those after all.
Consolidated the / partition into one, but leaving my /home partition intact, wrote it all in cfdisk. I won't go into the fact that I had to do it twice since I had previously mounted my partitions in order to remove the packages, but now you know.
Installed Slackware from CD with the huge26.s kernel, set / to /hda6, /home to /hda7, and /boot to /hda1.
Went through the usual, adduser (-G wheel,-g video, audio, disk, floppy, cdrom), startx, played around a bit, then didn't like the way my home folder was set up so I moved the folders into subs that I created. Maybe irrelevant, but some folders wouldn't drag'n'drop so I $mv'd them. I moved my program files into /Program_Files, including Freetype and other font libraries that were dependencies of other porgrams--not x, obviously, subsequents like cairo. Hmmm....built into slack11 but not 10.2.
I don't remember why I wanted to logout. But I did. And it hung a bit, I think the message was "Free Font Type FPP should be 1 is 2 fixing". Tried to startx again, and it hung bad with timeouts on x.serverauth, eventually logging into x with a box that said "Cannot start kdestartup check your installation [okay]".
Root logs in fine, but when I log into my user it's "No directory, logging in with HOME=/". I chowned, I chmodded, I chranupthewallandbittheceiling.
usermod -d (all permutations) did not help, neither did usermod -g users (thought maybe wheel main was messing me up).
I noticed that I have two /home dirs, under / and under /hda7--same files and folders. I know that the / structure will include other partitions, so I can't imagine that's the problem.
Help me. HOME={}.
/spare some change?
