can Mandrake damage a hdd?

I replaced Debian on my laptop with Mandrake 10. I retained the same /home. Once Mandrake was in place, I realised that I didn't like it on my laptop so I decided to put Debian back. So I started with the Sarge installer but there's a problem. I am told that there was not a clean unmount and I should use e2fsck --- but surely that can't be so? I tried deleting the original / patrtition and was able to do so but the same problem occurs. Is this something about the way mandrake installs??

I'm not certain about this, but could MDK have converted
the file-system on home to ext3?

Cheers,
Tink

well----I am pretty sure that it was already ext3---- that's what i normally select during my debian installs. Could it have done something else?

I am so irritated with myself. It wasn't broken but I just couldn't resist fiddling! Now it's broken. I can't even format the whole disk ---- same error --- "modifying an unclean filesystem could cause severe corruption" ----- great!!!

Hmmm! Irritation got the better of me ---- I used this horrible old cdrom with something called Windows 98 on it to format the HDD. Never thought I'd use that cd again I've just recreated my partitions without problems --- so Debian is on its way back again.

What a pointless adventure. I should have just gone to bed early
