Can I use the Xandros Install disk to delete the Linux partition...
 

Hi,

I did a [I]bad thing[I], LOL! I made the misteak of believing that Xandros Linux was the Greatest thing since sliced bread. So, I installed (dual-booted) it on my computer, which has both a 40 gig WD and 80 gig Maxtor hard drive.

Everything went fine. However, Xandros carved out a 48 gig partition for itself on the 80 gig. Now, I'm running into a space problem on the 40 gig and have transfered as much of the WIN 2K programs I can to the 30 something gig partition of my "D" drive, but still it's not enough.

What I will need to do, is to completely delete the Xandros partition on the 80 gig Maxtor and keep it as strictly a WIN 2K drive along with the 40 gig WD drive.

Now, the question is: May I use the Xandros installation CD to delete the Linux partition on the 80 gig and at the same time rid the drives of the dual boot to make both the 40 & 80 gigs, WIN 2K only?

I tried re-loading WIN 2K PRO, but it says my CD is corrupted, Thanks, MICRO$QUISH! You no longer support WIN 2K PRO :mad: :tisk: :cry:

Now, I'm no rocket scientist and a real N00Bie at this and at 61, it takes me awhile to grasp things in this old head. If you can make your answers as simple as can be, then I will be able to understand better.

Just some comments.
When I tried Xandros it was okay. I did not let it decide how big of a partition to install to.
It is strange that Xandros would take over half the drive for itself by default. That is not a good feature.
So Windows was cut down to 30GB and even another 30GB cannot solve the problem?
Do you really mean that you transfered "programs" rather than user data?
At work we have Windows 2000 running on 6GB hard drives that are not filled up.

I would not even consider answering this without an evaluation of what is really going on.

For instance what does something like the Belarc Advisor say about the space on Windows?

What does "cfdisk -Ps" and "df -h" show from Linux?

I'm confused...
 

:confused: I've been transfering WIN programs and datafrom the "C" drive to the dual-booted (I guess that's were it is) 80 gig "D" drive, in hopes of opening some "space" for the AVG package to work better and have space for the "software's aV, Anti-Spam, and anti-malware program updates to be downloaded and work.

As of now, when I go to My Computer and click on the "C" drive, it tells me I have less than 136 kb of storage on a 38 (40) gig drive.

If I could delete the Linux partition and remove the dual-boot sector on the 80 gig, that would allow me to maybe move the WIN 2K PRO O/S to the 80 Gig and leave the 40 gig to be reformatted into a large LINUX drive, with a yet-to-be-determined distro. :o

You have to forgive me, not only am I a :newbie: , but I'm nearly 61 years old with moderate dementia, so it's hard for me to understand things I readily could have when I was younger. I grew up in Commodore 64, switched to DOS 5.0, then 6.22 which I really enjoyed. I really wasn't a WINBLOW$ fan, until 2K Pro, but now wish to move on with a version of Linux that's easy to install, understand and will do what I need it too.

I'm a Ham Radio operator and radio scanner monitoring fan. I like logging all my contacts, so I would need a small, but searchable database that pulls up contacts by callsign. I also enjoy viewing pictures of nature, animals, weather, and space pictures and would like a program that enables me to view them as a slide presentation (with music) or individual pictures. I love music of most all kinds, except Rap and Metal, to me that's just noise, LOL! It would be nice to have a music MP3 player, similar to WINAMP that would allow me to play music in playlist. I love everything from Classical, Opera, some Jazz, Military (the War of Northern Agression, WW2 [all sides] National anthems of different countries), Polka's, Waltz's, Old Rock-N-Roll, Country and Western, Cowboy music, Celtic, Religious, Native American, Bluegrass, etc. You get the idea.

Well, now you know a little MORE about me than you probably cared to know.

I don't have linux on the 40 gig drive so I don't think those instructions, line commands would work. Any other ideas? I really DON'T want to reformat BOTH drives and start over as some of my databases for radio, and music are on there.

Maybe I just need to buy a 300 gig hd and try to get it to work with this old IWill K266 Plus, 1.2 gig Athlon with a gig of P-133 RAM.

So Windows is on the 40GB drive and you then added the 80GB drive and installed Xandros to part of it.
From your description of, "Xandros carved out a 48 gig partition for itself on the 80 gig", I assumed you had resized a Windows installation on the 80GB drive.

I booted my Xandros 3.02 OCE CD.
I went through the first couple screens and then choose "Custom Install" and the default desktop choice.
Now choose "Manage disks and partitions (recomended for experts only)". That brings up the partition program and allows you to delete partitions. I did not go any further since I do not want to change my disk so I do not know what steps are required to write your choices to disk without installing Xandros.

You could download the Gparted Live CD. It is a 30MB CD for partitioning.

Well,

I went to the suggested site, put a CD in the burner and clicked on download... It said to put a CD in the drive. Ok, I open the Burner's drawer, reset the CD and close...Nada! I'm not sure if it's because I'm in WINDOWS trying to download a linux program or what.

There IS no LUG in Shreveport, LA. and I don't know anyone locally that uses linux. You'd think a town of 250,000 would have some linux users.

I give the HELL up. I'm gonna find my Win 2k Pro CD, set the BIOS clock back to 2002 and reformat BOTH the 40 and 80 gig drives as WinBlow$ drive and forget the hell of ever having a working distro of LINUX.

Okay, Good Luck.

Gparted livecd is an ISO image file. You must burn it as "Image" CD, not just as any data CD. This is done by Nero and other programs.
The actual version is about 50MB.

With the Gparted LiveCD you can delete any partition, too. But, be careful, to delete just that you don't need ;)
