Can I use CD-RW in RedHat 7.2?

I have some questions about using CD-RW drive to backup the RedHat 7.2. It looks to me the RedHat didn't recoginze the CD-RW. Do I need to use specific brand and find specific driver? Or do I need to download some specific applicaiton to use the CD-RW?

Please give me some hint or link I can go to do more research. Thanks very much!

You need to set up SCSI emulation. I had to do that recently. Check these links out:

I'm also using RedHat 7.2 with a CD-R/RW & a CD-Rom.

First you will need to have cdrecord installed (not sure if it is installed by default or not) you will have to run this from the command line second look to see if you have XCDRoast, Gtoaster, Eroaster all of these are GUI frontends for cdrecord now you have the software part you need to have SCSI emulation loaded into the kernel (mine was already there) then in your LILO or Grub .conf (depends on with bootloader you use) you will need this line "hdx=ide-scsi" (without the "" and where x is the letter for you cd-rw/r) both of my drives work fine under RH7.2

hda=primary master
hdb=primary slave
hdc=secondary master
hdd=secondary slave

Good luck

Thanks very much for bubba169 and moger's reply.

Does it mean I can just go to buy any brand internal IDE CD-RW device and make it work under RedHat 7.2?

As far as I know most new IDE CD-R/RW's will work under linux as long as you have SCSI emulation compiled into the kernel. Mine is a Plextor 16/10/40A which is IDE connected to hdc=secondary master. If the CD-RW/R drive is installed at time of RedHat 7.2 installation then it should by default do everything for you (at least mine did). Read the How-To's that moger pointed you to also search The Linux Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org/ and one more way to search is
