I apologize for not stating my thoughts clearly. dd will have no problem copying any version of NTFS, since it is just a series of bits to it. The problems are with resizing, and maybe some of the other operations you can perform with Gparted and similar utilities, which do require an understanding of the FS. I don't remember the source of my info for the change in NTFS; I just stumbled across it somewhere in my reading sometime recently.
