Can't suspend to disk.

Why can't i suspend to disk? I have downloaded the latest kernel and compiled it with the suspend to disk option.
According to a page that I'm not allowed to post in this forum ( should a implementation of software suspend be available since

I tried to download their hibernate script but get this message when i try to use it:

Your kernel does not have any recent Software Suspend 2 support compiled in.
Please follow the HOWTO linked from NO URL for
instructions on how to compile Software Suspend into your kernel.
hibernate: Aborting.

Why won't it work?
