can't print with lpr because of "neighbor table overflow"

I am using slackware 4.0 on an ancient computer with kernel v. 2.2.6. I am trying to print a simple text document using the lpr command, but when I attempt this i get this error message:

neighbour table overflow
lpr: unable to get official name for local machine

The neighbour table overflow message also displays on boot, right before the login prompt.

Why does this happen an how can I get lpr to work??
