fdisk -l gives size, dvide it bt 512 and take off 1.

This old thread saved me tonight.

FWIW, this is a rhel 7.3 machine, so perhaps things have changed some, but I was able to just blank out the gpt label at the beginning of the disk. I never looked at the end. pvcreate ran happily after
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/emcpowere bs=512 count=1
