Can't tar joomla file

Downloaded Joomla CMS with my fresh Debian Etch server using wget. Tried to untar using the following and got the below error message. I also downloaded the zip and gz file and all gave me errors. also tried removing the -z switch but then I get different errors. Anyone have any clue what I'm doing wrong? Their forums yielded no specific answers. I might add that I can download the files using firefox on my FC6 box fine with no problem and can open fine.

Code:
tar -zxvf joomla_1.0.12-Stable-Full_Package.tar.bz2
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

If you have a .tar.bz2 file, then you need bzip2 installed (/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2), and you issue this command:
Code/Command:
tar yxf filename.tar.bz2

Info above from http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/h...files-t52.html

I downloaded (a while back) the .zip file, and:

mkdir /var/src/zip
mv Joomla_1.0.12-Stable-Full_Package.zip /var/src/zip
unzip Joomla_1.0.12-Stable-Full_Package.zip

...which unzipped everything inside the /var/src/zip/ directory

Also, whenever I deal with .tar.gz files, I always run:
tar -xzf <filename> which creates the folder at your current location and dumps everything into it.
##Note the order of x, z, and f in this command##
Have you tried this?

Well I just did an end run around the immediate issue and ftp'd the files that were ok from my fedora box over to the server and everything is working. I'll test what you said about the zip archive though just for my education. I'll let you know how that goes.
