Can't copy to another hdd

Hey all,

I don't know whether this is the right place to post this new thread, but since everyone can copy files, this could be in newbie too?? Read on...

I have a large music collection which I want to copy to another harddisk. From /dev/hda11 to /dev/hdb1 to be exactly. Both are formatted Reiserfs. The amount of diskspace on the target is enough. But once copying it complains about the drive error that the drive is full. Not only that! But my root FS is also full, when it had before about 3 GB of empty space... Strange since I used this syntax

#cp -r /mnt/data/* /mnt/hdb1

Where /mnt/data is hda11 and the latter hdb1

If I do `df -sh ` to check if they are, they indeed are, but a `du -s /*` lets me see that my root partition isnt full at all. I tried looking for newly written files in my root, but none could be found. Totally mad I resetted out of mere frustration and i found I now can no longer log in as root, but i can as normal user. Since the rootpartition is full, the disk can no longer be written to, so i cant boot into X, nor change any passwords. I managed to get into my rootaccount yesterday and tried to change the password but the password couldnt be locked...

In a flague of anger I reinstalled Slackware 10 again, b/c the former SW was installed recently... I tried the above again... And yes, the same problem did occur. I dont know what to do. Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar problem when I was using knoppix 3.6 recently... I believe the issue may be related the specific version of reiserfs or the reiserfsprogs. Try using ext3 on the drive you are copying to and see how it goes.

this is what you can try if you can format your hdb1 partition:
mkreiserfs /dev/hdb1
dd if=/dev/hda11 of=/dev/hdb1
