can't configure panel in kde 3.1

Hello,

I am using Redhat 8.0 and I recently upgraded to kde 3.1 using rpm's. Now I can't seem to access the panel (or kicker or whatever it is) configuration menu. When I right-click on the panel itself and choose "Configure Panel", nothing happens. When I go in through the control center, there are no options for the panel (other than for the background images).

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I can move the panel manually from edge to edge, but I'm dying to resize it...

Thanks

try opening the control panel, there should be under the 'desktop' section a thing for panels and the taskbar...

If you can't access this you may need to edit the config file:
cd ~/.kde/share/config
the file is called 'kickerrc' and is a plain text config file. You may be able to figure it out...if not you may have to erase it and restart kde, which will create the file from scratch, in which case you will need to customize it again.

If you don't know what I'm talking about just let me know and I will try to be more specific...

Thanks for your help, that takes care of a lot of problems for me, but do you happen to know where in kickerrc I can change the size of the panel? Basically I'd like a panel that is as long as half the screen, but centered.

I just wanted to add that you're not the only person who's experienced this problem. It worked after I upgraded to kde 3.1, however, soon afterwards it suddenly stopped working.

Any idea what could be causing this?

P.S. - I checked the KDE forums and apparently, there are a few other people running RH8 and have just upgraded to kde 3.1 that have the exact same problem. Someone suggested an rpm incompatibility with RH8 but there doesn't seem to be a fix.

go to www.kde.org and go to the forums, and then search for "taskbar".

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I can't believe it was this easy....

In the Readme on the kde website for RH8, it's one line that says "please make sure to install redhat-menus-noarch.rpm".

That's all you have to do.

http://ftp.du.se/pub/mirrors/kde/sta...at/8.0/noarch/

and it's at the very bottom of that page. Install that rpm and you're ready to go.
