I seem to have lost the ability to burn CDs. two days ago I was able to burn the same syle of cd-r using the gnome CD/DVD creator. but I have attempted to burn with three cd-r now and they all fail with the same message "there was an error writing to the disc".

dmsg dosn't report any errors when i try to burn. it does say "cdrom: This disc dosn't have any tracks I reconize" when I put in the cd, but that could be standard output when an empty cd is put it.

I recently upgraded a number of RPM including binutils. I havn't done much else with this computer so I'm tempted to assume that RPM are causing the problem somehow. Any suggestions?

Which distro are you using? Is there anything in the latest /var/log/* files just after you try to burn a CD?

sorry don't know how I forgot to specify, but I'm using redhat enterprise 5.2.

and no there is nothing in var/log/messages except the statment about the disc dosn't have any reconized tracks. I do see an error about an error initalizing my rpmDB, but i'm pretty certin it's unrelated.
