Can't assign password to user

Hi,
I created a new user on my system usiong useradd, but when it comes to assigning a password to the user account, I get an error saying the process failed. This happens every time I use passwd command. I logged in as root, so this is not a permissions error. Please advise an alternative approach.

What error are you getting exactly? Does it just say process failed? You are doing:

passwd username

right?
